Eye of the Beholder

The official name of the planet was Novea Persei Four, but the people who lived there simply referred to the place as Dustball.  It was a frontier world with a harsh climate and was covered in a variety of different desert types; the people who volunteered to settle there were rough and weather beaten, just like Dustball’s native life forms.     The landscape of the planet was dotted with settlements, the biggest being the seat of planetary government, Saddle.  But this isn’t the story of Saddle; it’s the story of a tiny little place called Gunsmoke.  Gunsmoke was the newest settlement on Dustball,

QualiaIt wobbled, almost tipping, but at the last it regained its balance.  It stood defiant, resolute.   
The sound of motors flared up, and a blade on clanking mechanical arms descended to sweep it and the other who had remained standing into the gyrating tray inside the gloomy bowels of the machine.  While it was flipped backwards or sideways as it was swept off the end of the lane, this would be expected, predicted, almost welcomed.  The time spent in the pinsetter’s turret was a reprieve, a moment in which it could collect its thoughts and bleed away tension.

I'm in the process of cleaning up "A Week in the Life" to make it publishable, and I thought it was kind of silly of me to have the Lasteans call their model of rifle R-9 and their model of machine gun MG-12, considering they speak Japanese. So I load up a couple English to Japanese dictionaries to see what the translations for those items are.

Turns out rifle is raifuru and machine gun is mashingan.

Hey you,
